Rise and Shine take Chiefs' scalp in Durban

A well-organised Polokwane City held off Kaizer Chiefs to record a 1-0 league win at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.

  • Kaizer Chiefs 0 Polokwane City 1
  • Mngomezulu opens the scoring in the 45th minute
  • A fourth win in six games for Rise and Shine

Match Summary

Amakhosi enjoyed the lion's share of possession throughout the night, but struggled to break down a determined Polokwane side, who were happy to sit back and try and hit on the counter. Once the visiting side scored just before half time, they upped their defensive efforts in the second stanza to successfully defend their lead without too much threat.

Amakhosi had the first opening of the game, but Ryan Moon headed wide from a seventh minute corner.

Chiefs enjoyed plenty of the ball but were however finding it difficult trying to penetrate the Polokwane defence and apart from a Dumisani Zuma volley which flew over on 28 minutes, Giovanni Solinas' side were not able to pose much threat up front.

Rise and Shine meanwhile were growing in confidence as the game progressed and they took the lead just before half time when Vusimuzi Mngomezulu played a one-two with Rodney Ramagalela before sending a searing drive from 30-yards out into the very top corner, giving Itumeleng Khune no chance.

Chiefs started the second half with a strong sense of purpose, but despite being on the front foot, they only had a Khama Billiat free kick, saved by George Chigova, to show for their early efforts.

With Rise and Shine happy to protect their 1-0 lead, they allowed Chiefs most of the possession, but did well to ensure they protected their goal as Amakhosi battled to create clear-cut chances.

Chigova's next save only came in the 86th minute, when he comfortably held on to a long range effort from Siphelele Ntshangase.

Five minutes later the ball fell to Chiefs substitute Bernard Parker in the box, but again Chigova was up to the task as made the save in what proved to be the final chance of the night.
