Mamelodi Sundowns 2 - 1 Maritzburg United
Lyle Lakay scored a late winner to help Mamelodi Sundowns beat Maritzburg United 2-1 in an entertaining Absa Premiership clash played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
Gaston Sirino gave the hosts the lead in the first half but Siyanda Xulu equalised for the Team of Choice after the interval before Lakay played his important part late on.
The match started at a good pace and Masandawana should have taken the lead in the 11th minute when Themba Zwane was teed up by Ali Meza but the Bafana international shot wide from inside the small box.
Maritzburg did not come to Tshwane to sit back though and had chances of their won as Xulu had a header saved by Sundowns keeper Denis Onyango.
The defending league champions took the lead six minutes from the halftime break as Sibusiso Vilakazi released Sirino down the left and the attacking midfielder did well to cut inside and slot past Richard Ofori in goal.
The Team of Choice were always a threat from set-pieces though and it was from an in swinging Daniel Morgan corner that Xulu found himself free at the back post and headed home the equaliser ten minutes into the second half.
The chances continued to come for both teams as Sundowns' Thapelo Morena shaved the upright while Ofori was forced to make a fine save from point-blank range from Tebogo Langerman.
The visitors continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack and Rushine De Reuck tested Onyango but the keeper came up trumps.
Just as it seemed the game was heading for a stalemate, Lakay was given to much space and time in the penalty are and he made no mistake as he beat Ofori to give the defending champions all three points.
It was Sundowns' third win in the league in their first five matches and they remain the only side that have yet to taste a defeat this PSL campaign.
The loss will be tough to take for Maritzburg but they are still winless after five league outings this season and have collected only two points.
