Doctor Khumalo: Wear Bafana shirt with pride
Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo believes the national side must play with pride ahead of Saturday's AFCON Group E qualifier against Seychelles.
Bafana are expected to beat the Pirates as the East African archipelago have been the whipping boys in qualifying, though the home side come into the game following an unconvincing display against Libya.
The Libyans top the standings while SA are in second and West African giants Nigeria are in third. The visitors prop up the group in fourth.
Nonetheless, Khumalo, who won the AFCON with his country in 1996, takes the view that the players in Stuart Baxter's squad must prove their worth.
He told Soccer laduma: "When you look overseas, you see teams fully confident regardless of the opposition and the smaller teams always giving their all, no matter who they are up against. Now the coach's challenge is to ensure that they get that confidence from their players all the time, regardless of the opposition.
"It is time for the boys that will be representing the national team in these two important games against Seychelles to show that confidence, and go on and win both games. Confidence comes through success and positive outcomes.
"The coach might be confident that he has done all he needed to do to prepare for the games, but if the players don't feel that way, then the coach's confidence isn't going to help. Wear that jersey with pride because you deserve to be there, otherwise, the coach wouldn't have called you up if you didn't prove yourself to him.
"Look inside and ask yourself if you are a player that is going to make South Africa proud. You're not doing this just for yourself or your family, but the whole country. You want to leave a mark and you can change people's perspective of the national team by showing that confidence and delivering the good results."
