Sundowns' young guns go down to Lions of North in MPC
Mamelodi Sundowns' U19 side lost in the final of the Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup on penalties to eventual champions Highlands Park in Cape Town.
The Lions of the North enjoyed an impressive tournament as they emerged as Group B winners with two wins and a draw in their group games.
They then dispatched Grassy Park 2-0 in the Round-of-16 before seeing off crowd favourites Ajax Cape Town 3-2 in the quarter-finals.
Highlands were dominant in the semi-finals as they smashed AmaTUKS 3-0. Sundowns were also unbeaten in the competition as they reached their third final in a row in the tournament.
However, the 2009 winners could not beat their opponents in the final during regulation time. The impressive Marate Ndieguene got the opening goal for the outfit from Tembisa from the penalty spot.
Yet, Mike Manzini's team hit back as Tlotlego Pitso found a late equaliser in the second stanza.
After a breathtaking extra time period, the win went to the Lions of the North 5-3 on penalties.
