Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Vaal University of Technology
Wayne Arendse and Phakamani Mahlambi scored the goals as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Vaal University of Technology (VUT) to progress into the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.
VUT, who campaign in the fourth-tier of South African football, made it tough for the defending PSL champions but Sundowns eventually broke them down with both goals coming in the second half.
Masandawana coach Pitso Mosimane made a number of changes to his starting line-up as plenty of fringe players in the squad got an opportunity to impress.
They should have taken the lead in the 14th minute when Bangaly Soumahoro had a header saved by VUT goalkeeper Obakeng Naane.
The visitors did not seem to be overawed by their star-studded opponents and fashioned a chance when Reitumetse Hlongwane tested Downs' keeper Kennedy Mweene from a free-kick late in the first half.
Sundowns eventually took the lead nine minutes after the interval when captain for the day, Arendse, headed in a corner from Jose Ali Meza.
VUT had a golden opportunity for an immediate equaliser when young Sundowns defender Nicholus Lukhubeni committed foul inside the penalty area and a spot-kick was awarded.
Hlongwane though skied his effort over the bar and the lower-tier side were made to pay for that miss.
Mahlambi put the game to bed with 20 minutes of the contest remaining as the substitute tapped in the second goal of the afternoon after good work by Lebohang Maboe.
Sundowns saw out the remainder of the game will now look forward to the draw for the Last 8 of the Nedbank Cup that takes place on Tuesday.
