Doc Khumalo: Khune injury big blow for Chiefs and Bafana

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo believes that Itumeleng Khune's absence for the rest of the season is a big blow for both club and country.

Khune has been ruled out for the remainder of 2018/19 with a shoulder concern which means Virgil Vries is expected to take over for the rest of the campaign.

Vries made a huge blunder against Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend which lead to a 2-1 defeat, but was solid in mid-week in an impressive 2-0 win over Premiership leaders Bidvest Wits.

Bruce Bvuma and Brylon Lee Petersen are the back-ups for the Glamour Boys in the goalkeeping department.

Nonetheless, Khumalo takes the view that not having the experience and top class pedigree of Khune available is a huge setback for Chiefs and the national team.

Bafana are set to play a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on 23 March. Stuart Baxter's men need a point to qualify for the AFCON tournament in June.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, '16 Valve' said: "All the remaining games have to be played in a short period of five months (in the second half of the PSL season).

"What effect will that have on the teams? You'll have injured players, suspensions, loss of form and all that to deal with.

"Let's look at Chiefs, for instance, and this has absolutely nothing to do with what happened on the weekend against Sundowns.

"Itumeleng Khune is out for the remainder of the season, which is a big blow by any means for not only the club but Bafana Bafana as well.

"All these things jeopardise your tactical and technical approach because it means you don't have all your players available."
