AmaZulu take home Durban derby bragging rights
AmaZulu earned the Durban derby bragging rights as a first-half brace from Bongi Ntuli secured a 2-0 victory over Golden Arrows at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
In what was the final game of 2018 for both sides, a strong first-half performance from Usuthu proved pivotal, as Ntuli fired them in front after just four minutes of play before adding to his tally in the first-half injury time.
Both sides were aiming to make a strong start to the game and lay down an early marker, and it was the hosts who made the early breakthrough when Ntuli slotted past Max Mbaeva in the Arrows goal after being teed up by skipper Michael Morton.
All eyes were on Argentine forward Emiliano Tade, though, after he claimed the Player of the Month award for the November/December period. However, his involvement was cut short due to a knee injury in the 23rd minute.
However, the hosts further stamped their mark on proceedings on the stroke of half-time as Ntuli stepped up confidently to slot home from the penalty spot.
Arrows came flying out of the traps after the half-time break as they looked to claw their way back into the game, but were unable to create very many chances besides Lerato Lamola's headed effort in the 47th minute.
Lamola and team-mate Siboniso Conco were both denied by AmaZulu keeper Siabonga Mbatha midway through the half, while at the opposite end of the pitch, Ntuli went close to completing his hat-trick.
Despite failing to add to their tally in the closing stages of the contest, their defence was rarely troubled as they held on comfortably to end the year on a winning note.
